Thanksgiving is special holiday for Americans and Canadians. It’s a national holiday: schools, office and shops are closed. People give thanks for everything they have. Families go to church and they celebrate with a big dinner. They usually eat roast turkey with cranberry sauce, corn, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. The tradition started in 1621 with a group of puritans called Pilgrim Father, the first colonists of America. They left Great Britain in 1620 because a religious persecution, on the Mayflower, a small ship. They founded Plymouth, on the North America and they called the land “New England”. The Indians helped them during the long cold winter. In the spring they helped them to cultivate corn and hunt. The summer harvest was excellent. The Pilgrim decided to thank God and in November they celebrated with a big feast together with the Native American Indians. The feast lasted three days!
